Legal knowledge-based systems (specifically, systems of "artificial intelligence" capable of automating certain aspects of legal work) have been the object of much dispute throughout the years. This report analyses a number of important obstacles concerning the creation and utilisation of such systems. Particular attention is given to philosophical matters surrounding the nature of intelligence, technical aspects of system development, as well as issues pertaining to the nature and substance of law. The main purpose of the analysis is clarifying how preconditions for legal knowledge-based systems have changed in recent times. |
