Space law stipulates that national appropriation of outer space is banned and that outer space shall be free for exploration and use. The use shall be the province of all mankind. With increased intensity and diversification of space use, the question whether different activities in outer space and on celestial bodies are permitted under the rules of freedom of use or whether they amount to banned appropriation is of growing importance.
Outer space is used by states as well as by companies and organisations. New uses and users put new demands on space law. Different interests need to be accommodated in outer space. These interests are examined as well as the possible way forward to achieve a legal regime for outer space, which is feasible, beneficial to mankind and in accordance with the principles of non-appropriation and freedom of use.
